The 2020 edition of the Annual Egboro Cup Football Tournament has started in dramatic form as the lowly rated Odo-Aafin FC defeated the tournament’s defending champions, Oke-Grammar FC by a lone goal in the opening match on Monday 7th December.
The competition which is played among the different quarters (ogbon) in Ijebu-Jesa is aimed at fostering peace and unity among the youths in Egboro land. It is also expected to create avenues for exposure for budding talents among Egboro youths. This year’s tournament is the second edition being sponsored by Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi.
At the opening ceremony on Monday, the Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa, HRM Oba (Engr.) Moses Oluwafemi Agunsoye was represented by the Iwarafas led by High Chief Samuel Bodunrin Ojo, the Asolo of Ijebu-Jesa who also performed the ceremonial kick-off to open the competition in earnest.
The opening match saw the under-dogs, Odo-Aafin FC outplaying the tournament’s favourite and defending champions, Oke-Grammar FC. Donning a red-on-red jersey, the youngsters from Odo-Aafin quarters showed enough seriousness early in the match. This doggedness paid off with a thunderous shot from outside the 18 yards resulted in the winning goal before the half-time.
It was more dramatic on match day 2 when two matches were played. In the first match, Ogbon-Iloro FC wallopped tournament’s debutants, Onigimeje FC 5 goals to 1 in a thrilling encounter. The second match of the day saw Odo-Ese FC beating Kolapa Bombers by 3 nil.
The competition will run for three weeks with the finals coming up on 31st December, 2020 all at the playing ground of Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School. Tournament’s champions will go home with the sum of N300,000, while the first and second runners-up will get N200,000 and N100,000 respectively.
